My journey began in elementary school when I first attempted to read the Bible on my own. It wasn’t a promising start. I stumbled upon complex genealogies and Jesus’s parables that left me overwhelmed and ready to quit.
Despite this, I maintained our family’s Sunday traditions—attending service, Easter celebrations, and Christmas gatherings. Yet the repetitive messages of Grace and Love couldn’t break through my initial barriers.
Years later, a chance encounter with a former college associate transformed my perspective. Hearing him confidently quote scripture from memory to a stranger on a Nairobi street both amazed and inspired me. Before I could ask how he’d changed so dramatically, he simply said with a smile: “You can do it too.”
The following weekend at his church, Pastor Don Matheny spoke words that resonated deeply: “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart… Be equipped. Just go ahead and be God’s hand extended. Reach out to the poor and oppressed world. Be the ambassador they have been waiting for.”
That moment changed everything. The mental block vanished. I discovered I could read, understand, and remember scripture without relying on others’ interpretations. What was once daunting became exciting—each reading revealing something new, even in familiar passages.
Looking back, I realize structured religion had created my initial hurdle. The breakthrough came through a simple message about direct relationship with God and connection to humanity. This understanding transformed my life forever.
I’m sharing my experience because I know others face similar struggles. This isn’t an invitation to join a church or religious affiliation. My motivation comes from experiencing that God is real and His Word is accessible to everyone—regardless of religious background or lack thereof.
While religious traditions offer guidance, a personal relationship with God transcends boundaries of time and space.
